THE SCARLET WITCH
WANDA MAXIMOFF
NAME
MARVEL CINEMATIC UNIVERSE
CANON
29
AGE
FEBRUARY 10 1989
BIRTH DATE
5'6"
HEIGHT
ABILITIES
POWERS
The aspect of Wanda's powers could be quite complex, due to the fact that her powers were originally thought to be produced by her contact with the Mind Stone in Loki's scepter (as of 2015's
Avengers: Age of Ultron
). Though the Mind Stone did awaken certain abilities later revealed to be innate inside Wanda rather than granted by the stone, Wanda's powers are further expanded after her grief over the loss of Vision urges her to subconsciously awaken deeper abilities (as of 2021's
Wandavision
).
MIND STONE ABILITIES
(these are powers that Wanda has had access to since her first appearance in
Avengers: Age of Ultron
, and which she has the most training and control over)
TELEKINESIS
— Wanda can mentally move and manipulate objects, doing so with her thoughts and careful movement of her hands. With this, she can also control molecules, pushing them together or apart, which in turn allows her to manipulate shapes or destroy them. In addition making objects float, she is also able to make herself and others levitate.
TELEPATHY
— Wanda can mentally read the thoughts and memories of others, and in doing this, she can sense their emotions and feelings as well.
MENTAL MANIPULATION
— Wanda is able to form illusions and warp visual realities to put others in a hypnotic state. She can force them to see dreamlike visions that are often times a distorted product of their memories and emotions. She is also capable of minor cases of mind control to make people move and think as she wishes.
PSIONIC ENERGY
— Wanda's most offensive approach in battles is the ability to create physical waves and bolts of energy in the form of red flickers of light that have destructive and forceful capabilities. She has used this to push away enemies and cause explosions, the latter of which has been capable of destroying vibranium-armored robots. When her emotions are most heightened, such as when she was grieving the death of her brother, the destructive power of her blasts can become even stronger. She can also use this ability to create defensive force fields.
CHAOS MAGIC
(these are powers that Wanda gained access to after succumbing to her grief in losing Vision in
Wandavision
but which she has little to no training on, therefore even she doesn't fully comprehend her capabilities)
REALITY WARPING
— Within a contained space, Wanda can completely warp reality, such as how she was able to form a secluded hex-trapped sphere around the town of Westview to change its complete appearance, shifting it through different eras of sitcoms through the decades. Within this sphere, anything within it is automatically transformed in its matter to match what Wanda wills it to be.
TRANSMUTATION
— Wanda is able to manipulate the matter in objects to make it change its appearance, structure, and size, such as transforming her clothes into different styles (i.e. changing her regular clothing into her Scarlet Witch costume), transforming a real piano into a mere cardboard cutout, and taking two single twin beds and combining it into one queen-size.
CONJURATION/LIFE CREATION
— Even beyond transmutation, Wanda has shown that she is able to create objects from nothing, such as creating wedding rings and dog collars. She's even been able to create living matter such as a false form of Vision and two children.
POWER BESTOWAL
— Wanda had been able to grant separate powers to her children, infusing them with power over super-speed and psionic control respectively. It's also believed that she was the one to grant her brother his super-speed as well.
TELEPORTATION
— Wanda is able to teleport herself and others from one location to another, typically leaving behind a wisp of red smoke.
ASTRAL PROJECTION
— Wanda can summon an astral form of herself outside of her physical body and can do so while remaining conscious or unconscious.
TIME MANIPULATION
— Wanda has been shown to be able to control the passage of time, such as switching rapidly between day and night, along with freezing time for everyone but herself.
WEATHER MANIPULATION
— Wanda has minor control over weather patterns, such as being able to summon up rains, winds, or thunderclouds.
PERSONALITY
RESILIENT
Wanda's most defining quality comes in the form of her resilience, evident in the consistent ways that she's managed to overcome some of the most toughest experiences throughout her life that would otherwise shake her confidence and willpower. From an early age of losing her parents to a bomb that destroyed her home, to watching her home of Sokovia crumble from Ultron's plans, to losing her brother to Ultron, to eventually having to watch Vision be sacrificed a number of times, before even giving up her children crafted from her own magic, Wanda has come to know loss to an incredible extent. Despite it, and the emotional turmoil that comes with it, she manages to push herself forward each time, whether in choosing to fight alongside the Avengers to make a change or to better understand her own powers in order to improve her situation.
NURTURING
While Wanda's life is so often overcome with loss, it doesn't prevent Wanda from experiencing great examples of love and care which in turn amplify her instincts to be quite nurturing. Though raised in a poor household in the midst of a terrorizing war, her parents and her brother brought joy and laughter into their small home, bathing one another in hugs and kisses. After the loss of their parents, she and Pietro would still often hold hands, looking after one another with an ever-present familial connection. Upon creating her family in Westview, Wanda easily put herself in the role of a mother, having an instinctive protective nature in defending her children and assuring them of the love she has for them, even fighting exterior forces to keep them safe.
IMPROVISATIONAL
Even with her initially limited experiences in fighting, Wanda has shown to be quite capable of improvising well under pressure. Out on the field, she performs quickly with her magic, from long-range to short-range battle, finding ways to use it both offensively and defensively, even without having had anyone train her properly on its use. In fighting against Agatha in her first real battle against other magic, she swiftly uses the simple lesson she'd only just learned about casting runes to turn the battle towards her favor. Even outside of a fight, Wanda finds silly solutions through the sitcom performances in Westview, such as quickly fixing Vision's mistakes in the magic show or swiftly using spells to find creative ways to hide her pregnancy from Monica.
CULPABLE
Quite often, Wanda will find ways to place blame upon herself, and while at times, this could be considered admirable in taking responsibility for her actions, it often tends to have more of a negative effect. When Ultron begins to destroy Sokovia, she breaks down, shaken in tears, feeling responsible for having contributed to Ultron's efforts to start. At the battle's end, with her brother dead and her country nearly destroyed, she's shaken enough that she was willing to let herself die for the losses she had caused, albeit indirectly. Wanda constantly tends to put a highlight on her faults, and when most of the world goes against her during the signing of the Sokovia Accords, she accepts the blame for constantly messing things up, momentarily denying Clint's rescue because she thinks she deserves the imprisonment.
DEPENDENT
Wanda has shown that she very consistently needs the presence of others, often in a way where loneliness seems to shatter her or steer her in the wrong direction. When she'd lost her parents, she'd been able to hold herself together because she still had her brother at her side. But when he dies after the battle on Sokovia, she secludes herself to mourning in her room, telling Vision that nothing would make her feel better except for seeing him again. It's only in having Vision at her side that she's able to eventually recover, but when she experiences his loss too, left by herself, it's in her lonely agony that she creates the reality-warped hex around Westview, creating a false family of her own in order to cope with her depression and loneliness, later noting the "empty endless nothingness" she felt from everything she's lost.
IMPULSIVE
Though she begins to learn more about strategic fighting and teamwork when working with the Avengers, Wanda's instincts still tend to be dependent on reacting quick on emotion, rather than laying out a plan and considering her actions. She tends to be fueled on her feelings, which strengthens her powers and can sometimes be a benefit, but this also adds an unpredictable nature that makes her a danger to those around her. She's often guided by her frustration and anger, nearly taking apart the S.W.O.R.D. facility once she sees Vision being treated as a weapon of warfare, and when she lets her emotions get the best of her in spontaneously creating her hex world, she traps the Westview residents in with her, endangering their lives with her overwhelming emotional pain.
